My Journey with yoga began in 2008 when my friend encouraged me to try a yoga class at Monroe County Community College. I had no real prior experience with yoga besides an occasional DVD. I didn’t know what to expect, but needed some kind of physical activity that could be enjoyed without being bored or feeling like I couldn’t breathe. In my first class, I wasn’t sure what supine pigeon was or how to stay standing in tree pose, but I came back to the next class. And the class after that….and the class after that! Sometimes I would still be confused about the order for the sun salutations and get frustrated that I couldn’t twist very far in seated spinal twist, but I kept coming to every class I could. I found a new determination in yoga. I wanted to connect with my body; to find its weaknesses and strengths. Also, to learn how to use my breath to calm my mind and support myself when my muscles felt tired. Yoga made me feel in control of my body for the first time, to respect my body with its weaknesses and to be patient in its development. In 2010, I took the next step in my journey, teaching others to connect with their bodies through yoga. I love to let people see that no matter their age, size or activity level, they can do amazing things with their body. I hope I can inspire and motivate others to try (and to continue!) to practice yoga, using the benefits not only in their practice, but in their everyday life.
